Were you aware that November is recognized as National Family Caregiver Month as well as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month?  Because of these two very important observances, families can take the time to recognize the unselfish family members who pour their time, energy, and love into caring for family loved ones. In fact, many caregivers are assisting aging parents or other family loved ones who have declining health, physical limitations, or a decrease in cognitive abilities. It is generally agreed that there are a great deal of physical and emotional demands when caring for a loved one, but there is also a less-discussed part of caregiving that is equally critical and that is the legal and financial planning. So, how  can we work together to support Alzheimer’s family caregivers? We have some recommendations right here in our blog.

1. Family caregivers need to have their work recognized. We need to start by appreciating the caregiver’s role before we discuss practical measures. Their sacrifices and their dedication to helping a family loved one needs to be acknowledged and then we need to ask how we can help.

2. Family caregivers need to be sure Florida estate planning documents are up-to-date. Many times a family caregiver has to make financial decisions on behalf of an aging loved one, so it is crucial to have updated Florida estate planning documents. This will ensure the family caregiver may legally be permitted to make essential decisions.

3. Family caregivers need a plan for respite care. All caregivers need a break! Some type of respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers, ensuring that they can rest and recharge. For example, another family member might offer to take over for a weekend or you could hire professional services.

4. Family caregivers need to stay informed. Be aware that estate planning is continually evolving. So, learn about elder law planning that can allow you and your family to both find the long term care support you or your loved ones may need and ways to pay for it.  Regularly consult with a Florida estate planning and elder law planning attorney to be sure you are able to best support family caregivers and those they are caring for.

5. Family caregivers may need financial resources and stability. Often caregiving can be expensive. Be sure your family caregiver is aware of financial resources, benefits, and aids available to them, which can reduce the financial burden. There may also need to be a conversation within the family of how to pay the caregiver for the care provided as they may have left a job to take on this important task within the family.

6. Family caregivers may want to look into building a local community for caregivers. Often communities offer support groups specifically for family caregivers, workshops and seminars on caregiving, elder law, and estate planning. Attending these can not only build a sense of community but provide caregivers with invaluable resources and knowledge.

Without a doubt caregiving is undeniably challenging, but with appropriate planning and support the journey can be made smoother. During National Family Caregiver Month, and throughout the year, everyone needs to commit to providing the best resources and support to those who care for our loved ones. Ensuring they have the right legal and financial framework in place is a step in the right direction.
